Local Area Topic: Term 6 Week 7

The topic work this week continues to focus on our local area.  This week, we are looking at possible developments in and around our local area.

Lesson 1 Local Planning Proposals

Your task is to look through the ‘Local Planning’ PowerPoint.  As you read the information, you will need to decide on the following:

  • Which proposal would you support?
  • What are the reasons why you think this is a good idea?
  • What reasons could you have to dispute the other options?

You can make notes of your choices and ideas on the planning sheet.

Lesson 2 Persuasive Writing

Your task is to write a letter to the council with the aim of making them choose your favourite idea from the three proposals.  You will need to:

  • Introduce your reason for writing.
  • Explain which idea you support.
  • Give reasons why it is a good idea.
  • Show awareness of points against it, but try to play these down.
  • Briefly discuss the other options, but make them sound not as good.
  • Confirm your choice again and ask that they hopefully agree with you.

There is an example letter discussing the new Lidl, you can use this for ideas.

When writing the letter, you can print off a lined template to handwrite your letter, or there is an editable version that you can type onto.

Lesson 3 Debate

Your task is to have a debate (civilised argument) about the planning proposals.  Using all of the information and ideas that you have looked at this week, you are going to go head-to-head with somebody with a different idea to your own.  You will need to be able to put the positive ideas forward and defend against the negative points – so make sure you are aware of them in advance.  Your debate could be:

  • With somebody else in your family.
  • With a friend from school.
  • If there is nobody available, you could write it as a playscript and be both sides of the argument.

Good Luck! J

Quiz time - What can you recall?

Have a go at our topic quiz on Kahoot.

https://create.kahoot.it/share/all-about-gravesend/cd586a2a-1ad2-419d-9c5c-56a14be16cd8

You can choose to play as a guest or you can make a log in (the basic option is free).

You can do this by setting up a phone/ipad or laptop to run the quiz and then on a separate device go to kahoot.it to play the quiz, more than one person can play at the same time.  You should be given a code to then play the quiz which you will need to put into device you are playing on.

Happy quizzing smiley
